Book Review: AEGIR’S Curse

Standard

Do your interests include Vikings, Archaeology, boats, and mysterious plagues? If so then you’re in for a treat with AEGIR’s Curse.  I haven’t read a good thriller in a bit so I was glad to have the opportunity to review this one. So let’s begin.

***I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an HONEST review***

The story begins with a nice and detailed prologue in Viking territory in the 1000’s. I’m a history buff, so this was pretty exciting.  A very special map is given to a monastery in hopes that it will never be found again.  Apparently it leads to a cursed land, at this point we really don’t know what that is, but it kinda seems similar to the Plague that hits Europe a few centuries later.  Fast forward to modern times and we are introduced to the cast of characters.  There’s a lot of them and I found it hard to keep them straight at times, but also I had to read late at night after being up with the kids all day so my cognitive skills may have been malfunctioning.

I enjoyed the author’s attention to detail.  The characters were fully dimensional and I could picture them easily, while the settings were vivid and easily reachable in my mind.  I also learned a lot about boating, which is pretty cool.  The first half of the book is setting us up for the actual “meat” of the story.  Devlin draws us in and makes us love and hate the cast, and that’s always a sign of a good book.

So the second half finds us trying to find out who killed a beloved archaeologist and took his treasure; the map from the beginning of the story. In addition to catching a murderer, our heroine, Lindsay also takes up the task of figuring out what the strange illness plaguing the town is and finding a cure for it. That’s a mighty tall order, but it wouldn’t be an interesting read if the odds weren’t stacked against the main character.  From what I gather, this is the second book in the Wood’s Hole Mysteries series, but I didn’t have trouble diving in and following the story.

I gladly give this book 5 out of 5 stars and sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did! It is available for purchase on all the major online retailers.
