“How does an act of kindness result in. . . marriage?

One carefree cowboy is about to find out in this sweet historical romance!

Born dirt-poor into a life of hardship, Allie Tillman seizes the opportunity to better her situation by answering an advertisement for a mail-order bride in the West. Upon her arrival in Baker City, Oregon, she discovers her intended is a low-down, lying thief. Determined to avoid a life of drudgery with him, she grasps at the one thing that will keep him from forcing her to be his wife — marrying another man.

Good-natured cowboy Ben Amick had no idea a simple trip into town would completely change his life. When he happens upon a mail-order bride desperate to avoid marrying her fiancé, Ben does the first thing that pops into his head and weds her. Willingly, he gives her the protection of his name and his arms, never expecting her to capture his heart.

Humorous, heartfelt, and awash in sweet romance, Bobbins and Boots captures the tender and tumultuous emotions of falling in love.”

As much as I adore all things Fantasy, Sci-fi, and Paranormal; Historical Romance is also dear to my heart. This book has everything I crave in a clean read.  Humor, strong relationships, solid backstory for the main character, and a good old-fashioned romantic storyline. Ben is a sweet and gentle hero, while Allie is strong and smart (but not without her flaws).  I also love a good CLEAN read every once in a while and Hatfield’s book is it! I was so focused on the story and what was going to happen next, that I didn’t need any naughty scenes to forward it along (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but they would’ve been out of place here).

I would recommend this to  ALL ages who are interested in Historical Romance, or those who enjoy well-written stories about the American West. This is Book 4 in a series, and can be read as a stand alone. It’s the first book of Shanna Hatfield’s that I’ve read and I will absolutely be reading more in the future. This book left me feeling hopeful and happy and I hope it does the same for you.  I should also mention there are recipes included with each book 😉 Definitely a 5 out of 5 Star Rating!

Happy Reading!

“Tully suggested the best way to keep Joe from marrying Miss Tillman was for her to already be married, so I did.”

Thane rocked back so hard, he had to scramble to keep from tipping off the chunk of wood. “You did what?”

“I married Miss Tillman. It all happened so fast, I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d done until I was partway home. I went to the bank, took money from my account, and left it at the jail for Tully to give Joe. I figured him punching me in the stomach and threatening to shoot me was worth five dollars. Then I got Pastor Eagan and we went to the boardinghouse. He married us. I remember signing a marriage certificate and Hattie and Edwin witnessing the ceremony, but everything else is kind of a blur.”

Thane jumped up and looked around. “Where’s your wife, Ben? What did you do with her?”

As though he finally regained his full mental faculties, Ben stood while a look of panic settled on his face. “I left her at the boardinghouse. I didn’t even think about bringing her home with me.” Ben groaned and sank back down on the stump. “I stepped in it good this time, Thane. What am I gonna do with a wife? I’m too young to be married. I don’t even have a house. I’m no better than Joe Lambery.”

Thane jerked him to his feet and shook a finger in his face. “I don’t want to ever hear you say anything like that again, Benjamin Ross Amick. You’re a good man and you’ll make a fine husband, once you get your head set back on straight. It’s too late to go back to town tonight, but first thing in the morning, you’re going to Baker City and bringing home your bride.”

“But, Thane, what am I gonna do with her? She can’t sleep in the bunkhouse, for gosh sakes.” Ben slapped his hat against his leg. “What was I thinking?”

“That there was someone who needed your help. I’ve never known you to walk away from trouble, Ben, and I’m sure this seemed like the best way to handle the situation at the time.” Thane pointed to the cabin across the ranch yard. “You and Allie can live in the cabin. It probably needs a good cleaning but you’d be welcome to use it.”

“Allie?” Ben gave Thane a confused look. Was that the name of the woman he’d married? The details remained rather unclear.

Thane offered him a pointed look. “Your wife’s name is Allie. You certainly can’t go around calling her Miss Tillman now that she’s Mrs. Amick.”

Ben looked as though he might be sick. Thane chuckled and thumped him on the back. “Come on. Eat supper with us. I don’t think you’re up to the teasing all the men will offer when they find out you’ve wed and forgot to bring home your bride.”

Finally, he let his gaze settle on Miss Tillman. The hope sparkling in those beautiful eyes made him lose the ability to think with any reason or sense.

Words spilled out of his mouth even though he had no idea where they originated. “It looks like you need a husband, Miss Tillman. If you aren’t opposed to that man being me, I’d be pleased to marry you.”

“I wouldn’t be opposed, Mr. Amick.” A blush covered her cheeks, making the freckles that dusted them stand out in contrast to her smooth skin.

Ben fought down the urge to give her a comforting hug. Instead, he took a step back and looked to Edwin. “If I go find Pastor Eagan, do you think we could exchange vows in your parlor?”

“Certainly, Ben. We’ll be ready when you return.” Edwin slapped him on the back with a broad smile as Hattie hurried up the front steps, tugging Allie along behind her.

Review: Darkness Before Dawn by Kellie Wallace

Switching gears, because we haven’t done one in a while, today’s review is a Historical Dark Romance by Kellie Wallace.

faed3acce91dbdaee887f4d135f360dd

Darkness Before Dawn is a World War 2 era romance with a twist.

“In June 1940, Germany bombed the Island of Guernsey, bringing World War II to the Channel Islands. With her home in the midst of war, jazz singer Catherine La Mar must adapt to change. Within days, the island is overun. Resistance cells start to emerge, hindering the German forces. Catherine’s life is inevitably changed when childhood friend Thomas Potter is linked as the ringleader to one of the Island’s biggest cells.

The people she once knew are no longer who they seem to be. But nothing could prepare her for when she meets Nazi officer Captain Max Engel. Her view on the war forever changes when she is given a chance for love and new beginnings. For once in her mundane life she unveils her true self, as Max teaches her how to truly live. Their love puts a strain on Catherine’s family, risking the lives her sisters and friends. As the war intensifies and divides the people on Guernsey, Max and Catherine must decide if their love is really worth risking it all?”

So I always deny that  I like Dark Romance and in a way that’s true. I don’t like the ones that feature domestic violence of any kind (unless the abuser is getting their ass kicked as the victim walks out the door) or sexual assault as a basis for the love story.  Those of course aren’t all Dark Romances.  This particular one involves loving the enemy in a time of war.  The war is dark, the depiction of life on the occupied Channel Islands is dark, and the enemy is cruel. All of these things make for a depressing read, however,I found myself eagerly turning the pages for more.  I found the heroine, Catherine to be a flawed and real character.  She has loyalty to her countrymen, her family, and her friends but her attraction to Max is real, and undeniable.  For the first time in her life, she’s with someone who makes her happy.  They have tons of struggles and seriously you don’t know what’s happening until the very end.  It’s a roller coaster ride of dark deliciousness and has a good dose of Historical fact to drop in your lap as well.  This is the second World War 2 Romance that I’ve read by this author, and I can tell she enjoys writing about the time period and she knows her facts. It also made me realize that maybe I just might like some of the darker written stories (allow The Doctor to convey my reaction to this revelation) pxpr_f-maxage-0 I devoured this book and hope she has more Historicals on the horizon.

I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.  I recommend it for Adults only as there is serious adult and violent historical content involved.

Book Review: Healing Hearts by Miranda D. Nelson

Standard

You know that feeling you have after you’ve read a really fun and lighthearted book? Yeah, it’s been a while for me too, but; I’ve got the solution.  Sweet and Clean Regency Romance.giphy-1

I just read Healing Hearts (Roselund Heights Book 1) and can’t stop smiling.  It’s a great story by Miranda D Nelson that has the uplifting spirit and pace of a Janette Oke novel and the nostalgia of an Austen tome.  The heroine, Joanna, has decided that marriage isn’t for her.  She spends her days assisting her uncle, the local physician, and managing her sister and father in their daily pursuits (ie she’s a control freak).  Her neat and orderly world gets thrown into full blown chaos when the handsome new guy moves to town.

Colin, is the hero of the story.  He has the brooding good looks of Mr. Darcy and is a talented artist.  He basically oozes 19th century perfection.  His reasons for moving to Roselund Heights is a mystery and Joanna finds herself hopelessly attracted to him.  Both characters are trying to heal in some way and have character flaws to overcome.  Neither is perfect, which results in realistic and balanced characters.

austen-book-quote-memeThe world building and character building was excellent.  I felt connected to the characters instantly and the author did a magnificent job at getting me to understand each one’s complexities.  The technical skill was also well done.  I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves uplifting and positive reads.  It’s a clean romance which means nothing more than kissing, so I can safely recommend it for the younger YA crowd and up.  I think Janette Oke fans will be quite pleased to stumble upon this series.  It’s the first book in the series with the others yet to be released.  I’m giving it 5 out of 5 stars.  It was a great morning read ( I started it at breakfast and finished it before lunch) and I look forward to the continuance of the series.

Book Review: In Want Of A Wife by Odelia Floris

The 3rd review in my Historical Genre month-long series of reviews is a sweet and clean regency romance. I have to say, if you like the writing style of Jane Austen, then I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with this novel.  download

The story starts with sisters Rosa and Arielle. Arielle is a social butterfly while, Rosa is an introvert….to the extreme. In fact, I would compare them to Mary and Lydia Bennett. Both ladies are sent to London to find suitable matches before the Season ends. Arielle is determined to marry for love, while Rosa just wants to do her duty and never repeat a Season again.

tumblr_n4ad8x8v8f1twtq8po1_1280As the story progresses, Arielle only has eyes for a dashing Captain in the military. Rosa, unexpectedly, finds herself juggling 2 suitors! She soon has to decide between love or duty.

I enjoyed this book very well.  It’s fast paced and if you’re used to a traditional style of writing (like Austen or Bronte) you’ll find it a light and easy read. It’s a sweet and clean romance which means just a few kisses and nothing more.  This also means it’s good for the YA crowd should they be so inclined.  I’m giving this a 5 out of 5 stars, but I have 1 complaint: It needs an epilogue! Or maybe a novella-esque sequel. I’d recommend it for austen-book-quote-memeRegency ‘shippers and as this book reminds me of Jane Eyre and a mix of several Austen novels, I think it’s a win for traditionalists as well.

Review: Diamonds Fall by Rebecca M. Gibson

I can’t wait until the end of my article to give you the goods.  I rated this book 5 out of 5 Stars!  I’m also still processing what I just read.  Rebecca M. Gibson killed me emotionally at 8PM EST/US last night.  I don’t write my reviews ahead of time and schedule the posts.  I like to write my thoughts down as soon as I’ve read the book then post.  This way I can insure you that my opinions and emotions are authentic and I don’t have time to ruminate on them.  So my gut and visceral reaction to this book : Devastated, Intrigued, Scared, Happy, and What The Fudge!? A recipe sure to make you want more.

13267991_10153565418266570_2334504704722807158_o

Annabel Hoddington is the heir to a massive fortune.  She has lived her entire life for one purpose: To Marry and equally rich husband and provide her family with a perfect reputation.  Set in Victorian England, Annabelle’s journey takes us on heartbreaking lows and gut wrenching lows.  On her 18th birthday, Annabel is kidnapped by a vicious  thug and his family and taken to a secluded village in the countryside.

Tortured and with no hope of escape, she finds allies and friends in the younger adult children of her captor.  Patsy, Billy, and Daniel Prince literally fight to keep Annabel alive.  Along the way, Miss Hoddington finds herself falling for Daniel. There are so many barriers for them, one is left wondering how in the heck it’s going to play out.  I have to say, until I reached the last page, I had no fudging clue what the author had in mind!  It is definitely a To Be Continued piece, which may upset some of you.  Fear not, the sequel, Rubies Fall is just around the corner!

Here’s why I gave the book 5 stars.  Technically, it’s well written.  Gibson is a master of description.  I could visualize every scene and feel all the intensity in every interaction.  Her heroine takes a journey of self discovery and changes for the better.  In the beginning of the book, Annabelle isn’t even aware of how unpleasant she is.  I didn’t want to like her, but soon she discovers who she really is and transforms into a beautiful person both inside and out. The ensemble cast is as lovable as the Main Character.  Patsy is brave and kind, (HufflePuff) Billy is a gentle giant with the biggest capacity for pure and genuine love. (HufflePuff) Daniel is kind, loyal, and a martyr for his loved ones.(HufflePuff) In fact, the Harry-Potter-and-the-Order-of-the-Phoenix-GIF5.gifcharacter development as a whole is well done.  I loved the good guys and loathed the bad guys.  I swear, I hated the “bad” guys just as much as I hated Delores Umbridge! If I were to summarize this whole story in a way that would connect with my regular fan base, I would tell you that this is a tale of HufflePuff vs Slytheryn set in Victorian England (minus the magic)! __871267139

So that’s all the stuff I loved about Diamond’s Fall.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!  I’m still processing it fully.  I hope I recover in time for the sequel.

Happy Reading,

Bibliogal

PS Due to the level of violence I would caution that this book would not be suitable for the 15 years and under crowd.

Witch of the Cards is historical, supernatural romantic suspense set in 1932 on the Jersey shore. Twenty-two year-old Fiera has recently left the Brooklyn orphanage where she was raised, and works in Manhattan as a nanny.
